Dear all ,
Our micro biology team are suggesting we stop using gentamycin prior to catheter removal.
This has been practice for as long as I can remember.
Am I out of date?

Hi
Stopped post removal Antibiotics about 2 years ago except when the original catheterisation was traumatic / bloody. (advice from urologists)
Variable as to who gets cathetreised.  No standard policy.  Blokes plus spinal  or elderly plus spinal seem to all get catheters.

Hi
We stopped post removal ABx about 4 years ago on micro advice; no increase in uro-sepsis / 2o infection
We don’t routinely catheterise our knee replacement patients; stopped about 2 years ago. Hip team restarted routine catheters about a year ago due to % going into retention.
Cheers

We don’t use abx for removal of catheters
And only on insertion if >24 hrs from surgery

On micro advice
