Dear All,
Do any of you institute pre-operative warming especially with NOF patients? If so with which device?
We have tried to as a multipronged approach to reduce infection. We looked at the easywarm blanket but our EME department found that in an oxygen rich environment (20%) it appears to reach unacceptably high temperatures.
I am keen not to try and reinvent the wheel so any advise welcome.
Kind regards,
Guy

On the basis of Northumbria's excellent work on infection we are about to start using the hot dog in Crewe as well. Have trialled other systems but found them not to be as good.

Hi Guy

We use Hot Dogs in Northumbria for elective joints and patients with a hip fracture - both pre and peri-op.

Works well.

Mike

We don’t institute preoperative warming for either electives and trauma, but only Bair Hugger during peri-operative period. I am not aware of any issues for us, but Mike has elegantly demonstrated its problems under laminar flow.

Thanks Mike,
We had a significant thermal injury in trust as a result of hotdog use and so regrettably the hotdog is no longer available to me. This is also the reason why our EME put the easywarm blanket through rigorous testing before introduction.
Kind regards,
Guy
